Creating a Guest Room Suite
WOW! So many of you loved our little third floor quarantine home makeover! I thought that I would share more details on how we transformed this cozy area with industrial modern furniture and bright happy furnishings and decor. A few years ago we decide to finish off our attic with white bead board panels and a gray striped painted floor. That is where the project stopped. Since then this full sun space had been Ross’s makeshift Covid quarantine office and a Winter greenhouse for our houseplants.
Small Budget Makeover
Unfortunately, when renovating our home we converted our fourth guest bedroom into a walk-in closet thus lacking a proper guest bedroom. All that was about to change with the addition of a few pieces of furniture and some extra quarantine time on our hands. After seeing Zinus (rhymes with Venus) mattress posts popping up on my Instagram feed I decided to investigate further what products they offered for our small budget makeover.
Easy to Assemble Furniture
Now I usually steer away from assembly required furniture but the turn from the bottom floor up the attic stairs is tight and poses challenges for large pieces of furniture. I assigned Ross to the task and in under an hour all four pieces we purchased were assembled. He screamed downstairs “This was so easy and by far the sturdiest furniture we have ever bought!”
Attic Bright Spots
We rolled out the new handmade Turkish rug highlighted in my previous post and got to work putting the guest area together. This is the area at the top of the stairs with a wide window that peeks out over our backyard. It is bright and up high you feel like you’re in a treehouse. We placed the Amanda Metal Frame Sofa in front and added two small white garden stools for extra seating or a place to kick up your feet.
I love the sofa’s low profile and zig zag metal frame. The reversible cushions are upholstered in navy performance fabric for easy cleaning and a guaranteed no fade from all the sunlight streaming in.
For nighttime privacy I hung a long black metal curtain rod. With ring clips I added simple white sheers to soften the space and filter the Summer sun.
Versatile Furniture
To the left I added what I believe to be the most versatile piece of furniture we own. Fitting in under the gambrel roofline with just inches to spare the Wesley Tall Etagere with hanging storage is my favorite addition. With 4 sturdy deep shelves we can store clothes, towels and linens, decor, baskets and just about anything else. This would be ideal for any small foyer, apartment entryway or even a laundry room! The possibilities are endless.
Industrial Modern with Function
Low Profile Modern Bed
After assembling the Wesley Full Bed we wanted to see how it looked paired with the bookcase tower. We moved the sofa to the other side of the open space in front of the TV area. I loved how the headboard was low profile and didn’t block the natural light from coming in. I added my favorite breathable organic cotton lightweight comforter and a turquoise throw to tie in the rug colors.
Real Wood Furniture
How many times have you ordered furniture online only to find out that is not real wood? Well, this is the real deal. All three Wesley pieces are constructed of real stained wood and black industrial modern metal.
Here is a detailed image of all the rustic goodness. To the right of the bed is the Wesley Side Table. For only $100. I plan to order a second one! It is the perfect height that I can use them both together for a coffee table in front of the sofa.
We are still on the fence as to how to arrange the top of the stairs area in front of the window. But until now we have an inviting functional and bright private spot for us and our guests to retreat too. We also felt that this would be awesome furniture to give to our daughter Chloe when she gets her first college apartment.
Furniture Layout
While I am not a proponent of placing a bed in front of a window I loved the idea of waking up with all the natural light. If you were our guest would you like to wake up to the morning sun or have your bed in front of the TV without a window? For me, I need the TV on at night to put me to sleep. Leave your vote in the comments below and I will follow up with the winning layout.
Until then, stay safe and healthy! Who wants to be our guest? Amie

Love this new furniture! The sofa would look great in the apartment over the garage- you’ll need to scope this out for us!!!

It sure is the focal point. We love how the whole room came together. Thank you Kristen!

Love the colors Amie! And always a bonus when you order online and the quality is up to par. Personally, I prefer a darker area for sleeping. One option is to leave the bed in front of the window but add a second layer with room darkening curtains that can be opened during the day to let the light in. But I know some prefer to wake up with the sun too.

Thank you Rebecca! Yes for years I lived in a dark basement apartment in DC and I think I am scarred from it. We had two tiny windows. One in the front and one in the back that was covered by a patio. No more dark dwellings for me. But I see your point! xox
