Post and Beam Lake House Reveal
It has been a very long time since I have sat down to my computer and shared a project! Although I have posted this fabulous post and beam Timber Frame Lake House on Instagram, I have not shared the finished images of the interior and all the details. This was a 2 plus year project with loads of hurdles to overcome as building on a steep lake front property proved challenging! I am super proud of how it came out. Come on in and let’s take a look around!
Let’s start by saying that there was an incredible team that contributed to building this Timber Frame Lake House. It was almost a year before it even broke ground. Going back and forth, fine tuning the architectural plans, selecting finishes, meeting with the out of state homeowners, site and contractor visits, paint , furniture, decor and so much more! As you see from the interior the color palette and finishes were modern and all natural.
Exterior Selections
The homeowners inspiration was a dark Alpine look. We close an architectural roof that blended in blacks and brown, metal accents roofs, stained beam accents and a dark painted siding. We went with an almost black green color from Benjamin Moore called Waller Green. The stone on the bottom is real stone not cultured stone.
My fear of heights was tested on several occasions after multiple site visits. This was as close as I got to the top deck ledge. As the Winter rains came down the water rose and interrupted the waterfront projects ever further. The boat house was last to finish. As the weather started to turn colder the focus turned inside. Authentic reclaimed wood floor boards from Pioneer Millworks in Farmington, NY were installed. The posts and beams bring your eyes up with a mosaic of designs. To add contrast and highlight these beams, I suggested that the entire ceiling be painted shiplap.
It may be hard to believe, but the entire interior is painted one single color with the exception of the accent sliding barn doors. The waller green from outside was brought in to accentuate the rich green from the exterior. Black metal fabricated stair railings, black windows and light fixtures add the third accent color to this amazing Timber Frame Lake House.
Authentic Reclaimed Materials
With the exception of the quartz countertops and composite decking there were no faux or fabricated products when it came to the building materials. Authentic post beams from TimberBuilt, natural cedar, brick, and real stone add to the integrity of this exceptionally built Timber Frame Lake House by JJ Coots and Sons. His dedication and hardworking team and subcontractors gave 150%.
Kitchen Goals
The rich gray simple shaker style doors anchor this open space. No upper cabinets complicate the design, instead real brick from counter to ceiling add texture color and character to the new cabinets and farmhouse sink. A chevron brick design highlights the range oven area and large stainless steel statement hood. MSI quartz countertops in Arctic White with a simple eased edge allow a space for the eye to rest. Green and brass light fixtures add task lighting without obstructing the lake and side yard view.
A green and cream floor cloth add a touch of whimsey, color and pattern. Carbon Gage Leather and Metal swivel chairs are from Arhaus. These stools provide added seating while giving this chef room to create culinary feasts for guests and family.
Great Room with a View
My clients wanted a comfortable, casual and modern place to entertain when the entire family stayed. A large wood dining table is THE place to gather for great meals, games, and casual conversations. Furniture had to be comfortable first! A large extra deep sofa, leather swivel chairs, and a wood coffee table are anchored by an oversized natural woven area rug.
As with many of my designs, when there are several square and rectangular elements I love to inject a round element. Pearched high in the vaulted ceiling is a 20-light modern wagon wheel chandelier. This beautiful light fixture illuminates the entire room both at day and night!
Loft Envy
Welcome to the loft. This space is a feast for the eyes when it come to architectural detail. The loft is a guest space with a private seating and work space, full bathroom, and a large quiet bedroom with two queen beds. This is the best space to look out to upper windows and see all the way down Keuka Lake.
Owners Suite
With waterfront properties, owner’s suites most all the time have spectacular lake views. This en suite with vaulted ceiling, large primary bath and huge walk-in closet is no exception. Dark wood and caned furniture give contrast to the beams and white shiplap ceiling. Accessories and bedding were intentionally in all shaded of earthy greens to bring the outdoors in and blend with all seasons.
Exterior Beauty
The side yard is a relatively flat space to entertain, play yard games or become a backdrop for future landscaping projects. The trilogy of metal, wood, and stone break up the exterior landscape and add visual interest from every angle!
Once Spring arrived the waterfront dock and landscaping was completed. Large stone steps, flagstone pavers, and large boulders were brought in via barge.
No time for grass to grow. Sod was rolled out and immediate green space was ready for Summer Fun! The views of Keuka Lake are fabulous from every outdoor space. Bright yellow Adirondack chairs add a pop of color.
Designer Color Tip
When choosing exterior colors go darker and more muted. The sun’s reflection makes the color brighter. What seems to be an almost black color is brighter with more of the true color coming out. The opposite is with interior colors. Go lighter and a bit muted. As always, investing in a quart of sample paint is always worth the investment.
This home has been a labor of love for many. The time and energy spent has been well worth it. To this day, my followers and friends boating on Keuka Lake make sure to comment on how amazing it looks from the water. If you are lucky enough to have experienced the beauty of the Finger Lakes you are blessed! It looks fabulous Amie! I love the way it recalls cottages and summer homes of the past with those natural materials, a simple palette, and a focus on the big view, with a woodsy feel. (I think too many vacation homes in recent years look like ordinary dry-walled upscale suburban houses and miss the special feeling of the old lake/seaside/mountain cottages.) This house looks like it has a nice scale with plenty of conveniences and artful touches, but it also has a special cottage feel of timelessness and simplicity.

This lake house is the perfect blend of rustic charm and modern design. The timber frame details make it feel warm and inviting.
