Holiday Bedroom Decorating Ideas
Decorating for the holidays has become so much more than putting up a tree. Years ago we’d trim the tree, add a few outdoor lights and call it a day. But, today we are decorating just about every room in our homes for the holidays. I am excited to be joining 4 fabulous bloggers with tips to decorating a holiday bedroom for your out of town guests. If you are coming over from Citrine Living Welcome. Seriously how gorgeous is Tamara’s home? Make sure you visit all the bloggers listed at the end of this post for more Holiday decorating ideas.
Christmas Traditions
My mom is so difficult to buy for. A few years ago my daughter, niece and I started the tradition that we would decorate a room in my parents home as a gift. My mom would go to work, the girls and I would feverishly decorate a room and she would come home, open the door and have a surprise makeover! Last year it was their master bedroom and this year we decided on the guest bedroom. We have a big family and plenty of visitors over the holidays so this was perfect timing! Here’s my go-to tips to making your out of town guests welcome in a holiday bedroom.
1. New Bedding
My mom’s guest bedroom is the softest blue by Sherwin Williams called Moonmist SW9144. She likes to keep this bright bedroom light, inviting and uncluttered. New bedding has never been a top priority but over time bedding can get tired and needs to be replaced. Around this time of the year I always purchase new pillows and sheets to start the upcoming New Year off right.
I found the perfect bedding that can be used all year round from Crane & Canopy. I chose the French Blue Larkin Duvet Cover and Euro shams. It’s classic blue and white ticking with thick white welting is just TIMELESS. This bedding is so incredibly soft. Unlike other duvet covers that get crumpled up inside, this set has the neatest ties on all corners that keeps the down comforter from moving around. There aren’t multiple button to button up either! The zipper is conveniently concealed just under a flap. Brilliant! A set of bright red pillow cases pop against the soft blue.
2. Add Seasonal Decor
The sailboat painting over the bed was tucked away into the closet and out came a large red glass ornament wreath. A faux pine garland sits ontop the entire headboard and drapes down the sides. My mother loves watching the cardinals eat from their bird feeder just outside the kitchen window so I added a wooden carved cardinal perched in the center would epitomize a holiday bedroom decorated up for Christmas.
A sprig of pine and jingle bells cascade over the headboard.
Design tip: Shop other rooms in your home. It’s amazing how different something can look when you take it out of the landscape you’ve grown accustom to. This accent pillow was the inspiration piece that inspired adding the cardinal and red touches that you’ll see. I relocated this needlepoint cardinal pillow that was in the living room tucked behind a few other larger pillows. It now stands front and center.
3. Guest Room Essentials
Ample lighting is essential. Chances are good at the end of the day that your guests are going to be reading or going over emails in bed. I replaced the short mismatched lamps with taller dusty blue gray lamps with lucite bases. On one nightstand I added ombre bottle brush trees and a scented candle.
I love to surprise my guest with inspirational or light reading books to take home as a gift.
On the other nightstand I added a drink coaster and guest room water glass set along with another short read book and ombre bottle brush tree.
We swapped out the Springtime prints for these festive Christmas wooden art found at HomeGoods.
4. Thoughtful Gift Baskets
Lighten your guest suitcase load and provide them with all the toiletries and those little extras that they might need during their stay. Nothing is better than a personalized gift basket. You know how fun it is to see the toiletries in a fancy hotel. Well this is even better. I love to spoil our guest with a gift basket from Panache Gifts. I love supporting women owned businesses and Katherine the owner assembles each of these gift baskets to your needs. How amazing is that?
Each of Katherine’s gift baskets come loaded with high end goodies. I chose the “HOUSE GUEST” which includes shampoo, conditioner and bath soap form the Beekman Boys, hand cream from Nash Jones, a toothbrush, massage and exfoliating cloths, a chocolate bar and an emergency kit that is stocked with all the travel essentials. She has so many themed gift baskets. Right now Katherine is offering 15% off your next order of a Panache Gift. Just use MEMEHILL15 at checkout. She will even personalize your note card!
I always add a little tray or plate for jewelry, watches, and anything else that might get lost in the shuffle.
5. Holiday Guest Towels
Just like a spa I add fresh crisp white towels for our guests. Behind the door is a hook to hang bathrobes and towels. Although they aren’t cardinals I found these adorable embroidered bird hand towels. I tied a red ribbon around them and tucked in a sprig of red berry bulbs.
Never pass up a luggage rack. They keep suitcase & baggage at arms reach and off the floor.
5. Creating a Cozy Corner
Down time and a place to sit quietly is always welcome in any room. Whether you’re on a personal phone call or need a place to put your clothes, an accent chair is one of my bedroom essentials. The girls found this lighthouse winter down filled pillow shopping and were so excited because it reminded them of my parents last historical home.
The famous red plaid ottoman the you have seen recently in my Christmas Home Tour actually belongs in this room. It is by far the most quintessential festive plaid piece of furniture my parents own. Every time I post this ottoman on my Instagram page I get tons of compliments. I think I may be receiving one for my own from Santa. Fingers crossed. I’ve been good.
Lastly, we layered on a plush white area rug so that getting out of bed on these cold NY Winter mornings are more bearable.
Friends Don’t Give Friends Fruitcake!
Layered on extra quilts and soft knit throw blankets. Cozy blankets are my number one favorite holiday gift this year!
Guest Room Ready
The girls and I did it! We successfully surprised my mom again this year. I called her later on that night and asked what she was up to. She told me “I am sitting in my new guest room soaking in all the Christmas cheer!” Now I’d love for you to head on over to DIY decor Mom’s nautical bedroom. Annie is not shy of color and she had the most beautiful home.

Oh my goodness! Amie you hit it out of the park. My favorite color to pair red with is that shade of blue. They work so nicely together. The blues remind me of winter wonderland vibes and then red accents and plaid are classic Christmas vibes. I love the fresh greenery on the headboard and I must agree with everyone that the plaid ottoman stole the show! I hope Santa brings me one too!!! Thank you so much for taking part in the hop! So nice that we have connected!
