Infusing Unconventional Fall Colors Into Your Home

Hi Friends! Are you searching for simple unique colorful Fall decorating inspiration for Fall? Well, look no further. I am excited to share how we decorated our home for Fall using some very unconventional autumnal colors.  You don’t need to plan it out or spend a ton of money.  It just takes about an hour and and one inspiration piece to begin.  It’s that simple.  Let’s get started…

Finding Inspiration for Fall Decorating

Each Fall I try to mix things up and muster up something new.  Last year we decorated for Fall using bright yellow with sunflowers as an inspiration. This year I had no idea what my Fall decor would look like until I visited my attic pillow stash. I pulled out my collection of Trina Turk pillows in navy, hot pink and orange that I purchased at the AmericasMart. You can see it along with it’s coordinating lumbar pillow. They are two of my favorites.  I found my color inspiration!

I pulled out a few fuchsia, orange and my new Warby pillows from Pepper Home to round out this colorful patterned grouping. They pop against our natural duct slipcovered sofas.

Design Tip:  Purchase just a few large furniture pieces in a bold pattern or color. Keeping a majority of your furniture’s upholstery in a neutral palette so that changing the decor and seamlessly transitioning from season to season or with trending styles doesn’t lock you in.

Decorating with Books

It’s no secret I am a bibliophile AKA bookaholic. Ever since I was an art director at a large Washington, DC publishing company books piled up in the lounge for us to read, review and take home.  I could never afford those beautiful expensive coffee table books seen in magazines so this was the next best thing. The good news is that pretty books are all around us these days.

Danielle, my assistant and I scour thrift shops, yard and estate sales, and a recent big haul  from the Brighton and Pittsford Library sales. We us these books for staging and inexpensive decor…. and never spend more than $3./book. We often remove the dusty, warn and torn dust jackets to reveal a rainbow of colorful canvas covered hardcovers and spines.

Artfully stack & arrange books to create eye-catching compositions

Fall Centerpiece Ideas

Last year I found this large silver with brass nailhead studded bowl at HomeGoods. It was one of those pieces that jumped out to me on the shelves. I knew I could use if for everything not to mention I love mixed metals.  It has become my go-to staple for coffee table centerpieces.  I filled her up with my velvet pumpkin collection starting with the biggest one first and topping it off with a mini. My Fall colors were coming together!

Invest in one large statement piece whether it be a large votive, pedestal, cloche or bowl.  You’ll never regret it…

Displaying Your Collections

There is always something that catches our eye. A few years ago I began collecting velvet pumpkins. They certainly do not rot and look at the array of rich colors that they come in! Some are inexpensive from Tuesday Morning, TJMaxx or HomeGoods and some handmade and worth a bit more. My first three were bought at the the Country Living Magazine Fair and have wood stems and are made from vintage fabrics. My favorite are from Etsy Artist Lizz and Pip. Her’s are the fancy ones with real stems and adorned with feathers. Each one-of-a-kind and a work of art.  I add a few each year for my Fall colors and decorating pieces. They just make me happy!

 Fall Fireplace Mantel

Every October my white owl collection magically appears on the mantel. Some are candles, some vases, and others just decor pieces.  More books add color and tucked in between are the overflow of pumpkins that didn’t fit on the coffee table. Bookending them all are two extra large ginger jars. The navy one on the right was a client cast-off and the large brass ginger jar to the left was a prize that I won on Instagram! Yes, you read that right!  I WON it in a giveaway hosted by Eddie Ross and Fete Home.  When I saw it posted on the FeteHome Instagram Feed I feel in LOVE! Like the NYS Lottery tagline. “You gotta play to win.”  So my advice to you is to enter all those giveaways. You never know!

I couldn’t believe this 20″ tall beauty was going to call my mantel HOME.

A brass pumpkin tucked in on the right balances the ginger jar. All the was left was to add cozy woven throw blankets and more of my white pumpkins to the rest of the room and we were all set with our Fall colors! Who would have ever thought that hot pink, navy and purple would pair so well with orange for Fall colors decor?  Everyone who has come into our living room smiles and falls in love with the simple pumpkin centerpiece. I am on the hunt for more.

As for the books, Danielle and I will continue to gobble up all the colorful hardbacks and share more of our Fall colors decorating tips and staging projects on the Meme Hill Instagram and Facebook pages. Come follow along and be inspired to think outside the box when it comes to decorating your home for the Holidays. You just might find a color you never knew you’d love.

Happy Fall Styling,   xo Amie

Amie, You always amaze me. Combining existing household items, along with a few new pieces, for Fall / Halloween displays will be fun and very deco. Can’t wait to check out my “supplies” on hand, then adding “new” life to my displays. Pillows are GREAT.
    Thanks, Amie.
