Giving my daughter a teen bedroom makeover was my favorite! Over the years designing and painting kids room have become a niche for me. I love all things imaginative; bright colors, crazy patterns and out-there themes. It’s not unusual that I get calls to paint a nursery and then get called back years later to redo the room in a more sophisticated theme. I’ll never forget my friend Beth who before she sold her house made sure that a perspective buyer would not paint over the mural that I did for her son! At the time I thought it was crazy but I get it now…. Its more than paint and cute stuffed animals…
Growing Up
Little babies grow to be adults and have opinions. Opinions on all things including the space that they spend so much time in. After 14 1/2 years of “Pastel Flower Power” plastered all over her room it was time for my daughter Chloe to get a room she helped design. I’m pretty sure I have scared her with all the color over the years. She now wanted a black and white room. “Mom, not a lot of color!” As you can imaging that was difficult for me to swallow. I kind of listened. We turned to our friends at Raymour & Flanigan for the perfect teen room. There are so many great timeless quality sets there that it was difficult to choose. So in true Amie and Chloe fashion we mixed it up a bit and chose a few pieces here and there and what we came up with was an eclectic mix of fun patterns, textures and loads of shimmer.
Fit For A Princess
A gold linen upholstered full size bed with nail head trim was the first piece that we picked out. This bed came in 4 great colors: Sandstone, Gray, and even Red in addition to the French Yellow. We had the option of purchase just the headboard but I love the way the upholstered linen frame looks giving the whole bed a more polished look. The large headboard on the Hawthorne Bed in French Yellow Linen allows for Chloe to stack up the pillows and lean back to study or relax. While we were getting her a new bed I added a super comfortable mattress and boxspring also from Raymour & Flanigan. It was time. Chloe says she’s never slept better!
UpCycling
Her wood armoire got a coat of fresh semi-gloss white paint and interior walls covered with contact paper. I purchased any and every black and white storage box so that all her stuff is well organized and out of sight. A chevron metallic gold decal ( yes I said decal) was applied just below the ceiling line to draw your eyes up.
Walls were painted in a soft gray color Sherwin Williams Silverpoint SW 7653 to make the white furniture and accessories pop. The green Paris Lamp is the perfect reading light and of course we loved it’s gold accents. Notice the French theme yet? A pair of ceramic Foo Dogs stand guard and sit on top the white Willow Point Nightstand. This nightstand comes in two sizes. We loved that this collection had feminine lines with out being too juvenile. Black and white polka dot Kate Spade bedding set and turquoise sheets and hot pink agate pillows from Society 6 dress up the bed.
Role Models
Do What You Love. Be Fearless. C’est la Vie. You are so Loved. I tried to make her room a “positive vibe only” space. Hoping that she remembers just how fierce she can be.
Finishing Touches
Black and white Lush Decor Wilbur striped curtain panels and pink glass finial curtain rods add drama and height to the windows and the mod Possini White Flower chandelier casts awesome shadows at night. A shag white rug adds warmth to the hardwoods and more black and white goodness added all over. You might remember her waste basket from our Christmas Home Tour 2015. I used it to put her Christmas tree in!
Striking Gold
I think we’ve struck gold with the Gold Elio Chair. We had to get this amazing gold chair and use if for her desk. Such a chic twist on the French bistro chair and compliments her white lacquered and gold desk. Tucked in the corner nicely is The Santos Chair in black and white polka dots! A sleek lined, compact and uber comfortable accent chair that’s the perfect spot for friends or tomorrow’s outfit. A trio of white square cubby shelves hold frames and collectibles.
A white etagere bookcase holds frames, schoolbooks, yearbooks, and journals. A vintage black and speckled gold thrift store mini lamp fits juuuuuuust right in between shelves.
A full length gold leaf mirror from Pottery Barn reflects light and perfect for checking outfits on the go! Mirrors are a must when taking on a teen bedroom makeover!
Stylish Storage
Gone is the hand me down chipped dresser and in comes the beautiful Willow Point Dresser. The top drawers are velvet lined! Makes the dresser seem so special and we loved the slightly barreled front and scalloped edge. A nice feminine touch that goes well with the silhouette of the headboard. Her signed Romero Britto portrait still takes center stage. To see more of Romero’s colorful artwork, click here.
Behind the scenes and in the details
I used a level and Scotch Blue Delicate Surface painter’s tape to ensure that the chevron decal stayed consistently straight. It was easy to apply and very forgiving if you needed to adjust. These decals were found in the clearance shelf at Target for $5. each package. I bought all four packages and it was just enough. Phew!
Anything polka dot or metallic gold was a magnet for Chloe when designing our teen bedroom makeover. We found this adorable tiered Cynthia Rowley jewelry stand at HomeGoods.
Smart Storage Solutions
Do More of What Makes You Sparkle! More boxes with inspirational quotes were purchased from HomeGoods along with the white shag rug and uber plush white throw blanket.
The Before and After Transformation
This hand me down armoire was unfinished pine and had darkened over the years. We removed the door, painted her semi-gloss white and added plum colored agate stone knobs from HomeGoods. We loved the way it looked without the doors but realistically we knew it wasn’t going to stay this neat. So we put the doors back up and now its a nice surprise to see the finished interior! Two rolls of Glacier Gray Trellis contact paper covered the entire interior. This cute moroccan trellis pattern in gray was soft and bright.
Golden Storage
More organization than you could ever imagine! A drilled hole in the back of the armoire makes this the perfect landing pad for anything electronic. They electronics go in there at night and the door gets closed. The organizer is an ideal place for student IDs, cell phones, chargers, wallets and everything else under the sun. Let your Light Shine gold glitter art, organization tray, ring holder and stackable mini boxes purchased from HomeGoods. For super chic gold desk accessories. Our teen bedroom makeover was almost done!
We used to have ziplock bags stuffed with all these pens, pencils and markers. I purchased this Gold Quatrefoil desk caddy at Kirkland’s along with a few of the black and white boxes. I might steal this for cutlery this summer down at the cottage.
Pink agate pillows and C’est La Vie pillow cover purchased from Society 6. They represent a slew of artists and you can custom order the design on a multitude of items. Please go check them out and support our artist!
Taking It All In
After finishing our teen bedroom makeover I just sat in there and took a deep breathe. What a fun project and it took more than myself throwing it all together. I was so fortunate to partner up with the kind people of Raymour & Flanigan. They helped me furnish this wonderful room for a wonderful kid. Their team of salespeople are amazing and you should see the wonderful community service projects that they participate in. If you find that you don’t have a Raymour & Flanigan near you please visit their website and see what items they ship! Like always thanks for swinging by happy decorating!
