Paint It Black

If I told you that I wanted to paint a sunroom BLACK would you think I was crazy? Probably. That’s the reaction I got when I told my client Amy that I wanted to paint the walls in her bright sunroom black.  I’ve decorate almost every room in Amy’s home and by now she knows to trust me. I had a vision of black, white and gray with rustic warm wood accents. Here’s what I started with…

sunroom renovation ideas, but in bookcases, fall decorating ideas
This classic Tudor style home’s sunroom was painted with bright golden yellow paint. In the center, a large fireplace covered with harvest gold grasscloth wallpaper. The mantel was natural and blended into the room’s decor.  Although the bookcase was pretty and somewhat functional, it was not part of the home’s original design. These narrow shelves became a catch-all for orphan decor not to mention blocked light to the adjacent living room. It had to come down. I know. More gasps….

After

As soon as the bookcase came out light flooded into the living room and my love for balance was restore. The walls were painted in Sherwin Williams Tricorn Black, a deep rich black with warm undertones. Immediately the bright white trim popped! I had Amy’s husband Guy paint the oak fan blades gloss black. The copper ceiling fan would be my inspiration for the metallic accessories.

Fireplace Focal Point

Faux Tin Tile Wallpaper

The grasscloth paper came down to make the fireplace the focal point. Thinking outside the box I choose a faux tin tile wallpaper. You cannot believe how realistic this paper is! My wallpaper hanger Tim had quite a time figuring out the math of centering the tiles but it sure was worth it. What do you think?

This awesome tin tile wallpaper by HGTV Home comes is three colors options. I decided on white. Up close you can see the metallic silver and rusty copper undertones. Where would you use this paper? I can see it on a ceiling or as an accent wall in a commercial as well as a residential application. The cracked hearth tile was replaces with a black soapstone slab and now this double sided fireplace is ready for her first Fall night fire. I think Joanna Gaines would approve.

Styling A Fall Mantel

This is the only TV on the first floor so I made sure that the neighboring decor was inviting and filled with texture without creating cluttered vignettes. Wooden candlesticks, distressed picture frames filled with Amy’s boys, fall scented candles and tall grasses frame out the TV and bring your eye up.

Seductive Slipcovered Sofas

It comes to no surprise that my favorite sofas happens to be slipcovered. Amy wanted a sofa that could withstand the wear and tear of her active three boys and Otto the golden retriever.  It was a tall order to fill with keeping the relaxed farmhouse style look of her favorite HGTV show Fixer Upper. We replaced her oversized loveseat with the Willowick Gray Slipcovered Twill Sofa.  It’s warm gray twill fabric and super comfortable deep seat, comfy cushions and accent pillows sit front and center under the huge picture windows looking out over the picturesque treed yard.

Fall Pillow Perfection

Velvet And Embroidery Pillows

Even though the sofa  came with four accent pillows I order Amy additional Fall inspired pillows. You know me. The more the merrier!  Last year my obsession with velvet started and the love hasn’t stopped.  These down filled pillows are the perfect affordable Fall addition with out breaking the bank. They are ideal for laying on the couch or snuggling up on the floor for family movie night. So pile them on!

Decorating with Velvet is a MUST this Fall!

Fall Coffee Table Styling

Next up was a coffee table. Amy was surprised when I suggested bringing in her outdoor porch table as a companion to her new sofa. The Upstate NY elements had weathered the wood and rusted the tin top to rustic farmhouse perfection.

Often Coffee Tables Second as Ottomans

Who doesn’t love to kick their feet up in front of a fire? Whether Amy and her family are watching TV, surfing the internet or reading a book we needed the tabletop decor to be unfussy and carefree.  I added a set of wooden trays for containing books, candles, remotes and seasonal decor.  This sturdy set of wooden trays with metal handles are ideal for eating and snacking in addition to entertaining with.

Pumpkin Spice anyone? Amy loves candles and ambiance lighting. I added a new favorite of mine- The Atlas Candle Holder. This cylindrical beauty is a work of art. I love it’s sturdy cement base and combination of black steel and copper soldered details. I also added a light-up chalkboard painted pumpkin. The shadows and light they both create at night is like being in a planetarium. Who needs TV, right?

Mixing Metals

Always add a metal element…Mixing metals is totally acceptable. Here on the table we have three metals all playing well together. The tin table top reads as a gray that matches the stripe chair fabric. The iron handles of the trays pairs with the Atlas Candle Globe and the copper in the candlestick and pumpkin stem compliment the warm metal of the ceiling fan in their farmhouse style sunroom.

Embrace imperfection. Like your favorite pair of jeans weathered furnishings tell a story.

Finishing out the coffee table styling is a collection of Guy’s favorite golf course books, a set of wooden drink coasters, leather journal and seashell from their annual Cape May beach vacation.

Additional Seating

Once the built-in bookcase and wooden bench seat came out I had a long wall to address. Like the kitchen, everyone loves to be in cozy intimate rooms so extra seating is always welcome. With the new access to the sunroom the path needed to be open. I added a narrow gray upholstered nailhead bench and an array of accent pillows, blankets and additional rustic decor.

We brought in more rustic accessories like these rolling tree stump side tables, distressed floor lamps with linen shades, moss orbs in white clay containers, a set of copper and tin stacking suitcases and a variety of festive ceramic pumpkins that will stay out in this farmhouse style sunroom until we decorate for Christmas.

Decorating Tip:

Cozy woven throw blankets warm up any seating area. This is the perfect accessory to add color, texture and pattern to this farmhouse style sunroom. I go straight for any blanket with an interesting fringe or tassels. Layer them on!

To the left of the porch door I created Amy a super cozy and inviting seating corner with ample lighting, an extra ottoman and another wooden tray. There’s no better place to watch the Fall leaves change color and wind down after her busy day.

It was a risk taking out the bookcase but we have created an even cozier space for Amy, her family and their friend’s to gather and soak up Fall in.  Even with the black walls we have managed to create a large bright balanced and inviting farmhouse style sunroom that was previously unused. If you’d like to see how we transformed this home’s basement into family entertaining central read my post on A Fixer Upper Inspired Basement Remodel. It happens to be one of my most popular posts to date!

Transitioning into Fall

I always feel like September is a decor transition month. I’m not quite ready for the pumpkin pileups but still yearn for Fall touches. Going neutral with these big furniture items allows Amy to transition into the Holidays easier. How do you decorate for Fall? Do you go straight from popsicles and pools to pumpkins? I know I’m ready for some pumpkin spice coffee, hot soups  and warm apple pie. Bring on Fall!
