how-to-style-a-lake-house-for-fallHello and welcome to the first of a monthly How to Style a Fall Coffee Table series with some incredible talented blogger friends! If you are just coming over from  my dear friend Reesa’s MOD MAX GLAM  blog welcome! Don’t you love how she incorporated the textures of Fall into her living room? Seriously she is one of my favorites!

Decorating with PUMPKINS

You’ve heard me say it before and I will say it again Fall is by far my favorite season.  In Upstate NY we try to squeeze the most out of this colorful transition before the cold winter months keep us bundled up indoors.

In October, we are still spending time down at our lake house on Honeoye Lake.  The 40 minute drive from the city is filled with rolling hills of ambers, rusts, and golden yellows. There’s a farm on every corner and I am always stoping to take pictures or finding a new farmer’s market to try.  Along the way the roadside farms sell their crops and there’s no better place to buy pumpkin, gourds, corn husks and harvest vegetables. It feels good to support local farmers!

Natural Fall Accents

This year for decorating at the lake I chose to go natural, simple and low maintenance. We aren’t there during the week so no elaborate floral arrangements or anything that needed too much attention. Last week, I purchased several pumpkins in a variety of sizes and gourds in all shapes and colors.

I am a big fan of groups so when I came across a container of white mini corn husk pumpkins in the check out aisle of HomeGoods I had to have them. These little mini guys will be making an appearance throughout the Fall. Here I’ve displayed them in a marble bowl with vintage dominos and scrabble pieces. We aren’t big into the TV, so games, cards and other unplugged family activities rule at the Lake. Someone’s always leaving a silly phrase…..

Gourds Galore

I purchased this large rustic wooden tray on the Cape two summers ago and it has become the staple of my Fall coffee table styling. We often have to move our coffee table to pull out the sleeper sofa so a tray makes it a breeze to move everything at once. Trays also help contain smaller grouped items. Layer tray on tray. A vintage green art deco metal tray holds gourds and a ceramic pumpkin jar and adds just enough color to this neutral rustic palette. A guidebook of trees and foliage help with identifying local Fall colors. Wooden coasters are stacked and topped with a mini pumpkin.

A vintage glazed pottery vase holds the last of our hydrangeas and garden flowers. This vignette is low so that it doesn’t interrupt the view of the fireplace and lake just to the right.

The white pumpkins will be hanging out in this handmade live edge wooden bowl also found in the kitchen department at HomeGoods.

Fall Accent Pillows

The cottage may be small but its packed with color. The yellow and orange graphic accent pillows get pulled out of storage tying in the colors of the coffee table vignette.

More pumpkins, gourds and birch branch covered candles are added to the mantel for a pop of autumnal color.  The rustic wooden elements of the tray, coasters, and bowl tie in with the reclaimed wood mantel and round natural mirror.

Design Tip: When looking to add texture and interest to your Fall decor look no further than our your front door or in your pantry! Here I’ve created a sweet arrangement with a $.50 mini pumpkin, popcorn kernels and yard clipping such as berries and zebra grass plumes. Fallen branches, acorns and other yard finds add to the rustic charm.

    Amie!
Your post is fantastic. I read every word and I was right there with you on your road trip to your cabin. My husband is from Vermont and we lived there for five years, so I pictured all the road stands you talked about. Your cabin is perfect and I loved how you popped the orange and yellow themes! Utter perfection and nice surprise touches! Congrats on a great post!

Wow! What a pleasure it was to linger on every picture and read through all your ideas! I absolutely love your use of color! I tend towards neutrals so much that this really made me want to branch out with color more! I also love your use of nature. Not only are things from nature beautiful they are often, as you say, free….I can’t wait to see next time! xoxo Jodie

Amie, You’ve done such a great job styling here. Trust me, I am taking notes! Love the mix of colors, textures, and natural elements that mix and match like they do in nature. It’s at once surprising and real. You are so lucky to have such a beautiful lake house to retreat to. Blessings to you, Sweet Friend, Julie
