Every year around this time Sherwin Williams announces their Color of the Year. As a color consultant and self-proclaimed color geek you can just imagine how excited I am to get the email announcing the color. The Color of the Year for 2018 Oceanside SW6496 made me even more happier than in previous years. Oceanside is a deep, rich, dark, moody and luxurious turquoise blue. I couldn’t wait to dive into a sea of possibilities when it came to decorating with this color.

If you subscribe to my blog it’s no surprise that turquoise is one of my all-time favorite colors. I’ve been decorating with turquoise for years now and I probably will for years to come. A few years ago I hand painted a teen’s bathroom in this color scheme! It was so rewarding to see the finished project.  I had to work fast for this faux finishes to look good. This was the inspiration for my quick and easy DIY painting : only on a smaller scale.

What does the color Turquoise mean?

According to the website Empower Yourself with Color Psychology, turquoise controls and heals the emotions creating emotional balance and stability. It radiates the peace, calm and tranquility of blue and the balance and growth of green with the uplifting energy of yellow. The color turquoise helps to open the lines of communication between the heart and the spoken word. It presents as a friendly and happy color enjoying life.

This is a color that recharges our spirits during times of mental stress and tiredness, alleviating feelings of loneliness. You only have to focus on the color turquoise, whether on a wall or clothing and you feel instant calm and gentle invigoration, ready to face the world again! Turquoise heightens levels of creativity and sensitivity and encourages inner healing through its ability to enhance empathy and caring. It heightens our intuitive ability and opens the door to spiritual growth.  It is the color of the evolved soul.  How can you not want to add turquoise to your life after learning all that?

Besides having a few turquoise pieces in my house I thought it would be a great idea to paint some store bought pumpkins using Sherwin-Williams Oceanside. I purchased 4 artificial foam pumpkins: two large and two small.

I didn’t need much more supplies other than my paint paint brush and a can of leftover ceiling white paint from our last painting job. Two were base painted Oceanside and two white.

The first large one was ombre. I painted this pumpkin Oceanside and while it was wet I dipped my paintbrush into the white paint.  All while wet, I blended the hues as I moved down the pumpkin. By the time I got to the bottom of the pumpkin it was a lighter shade of turquoise.

The other small turquoise pumpkin was painted with random polkadots in various sizes. I wasn’t too concerned if the white polkadot had turquoise in it. Doing this added depth and interest. For the larger white pumpkin on every third crease I painted a turquoise stripe and alternating up and down arrows. With the backside of the paintbrush I applied tiny white polkadots down the thin turquoise stripe.

On the smaller white pumpkin I alternated Oceanside and white stripes blending each and dipping my paintbrush in the lighter colors. Doing this gave an uneven intentional look.

The pumpkins dried in under two hour. These four will make their debut in a tablescape mixing with real and my beloved velvet handmade pumpkins from Lizz and Pip. To read more about my velvet pumpkins to see my fall mantlescape click here.

Pretty! I think that would be good for the Teal Pumpkin project for my front door (teal pumpkin in front of the door = non food treats sign).
